Newfoundland and Labrador economy should ‘rock’ in 2010
The Newfoundland and Labrador economy is projected to contract by approximately 3.4% in 2009 following a modest 0.1% decline in 2008.
Heavy construction spending steady during recession and early recovery
Heavy construction market drivers are balanced between positive and negative. This is consistent with spending trends which have flat for over a year, except for a brief dip early in the recession.
Nonresidential building recession will persist through most of 2010
Most market drivers for nonresidential building construction are negative, especially for developer financed commercial projects. Many developer projects are being delayed, or cancelled and some previously started projects are being suspended, notes Reed Construction Data chief economist Jim Haughey.
Residential market pauses but will continue recovery
Most residential market drivers are currently positive or at least neutral. While still high, the surplus of homes for sale is falling quickly.
