A pleasingly aromatic potpourri for the economy’s year-end
The year 2010 is concluding in a mostly pleasing manner with respect to recent economic data.
Heavy Construction: Sluggish Recovery Expected
Heavy construction has held up far better than nonresidential buildings and residential during the recession and the early stage of the economic recovery but that trend is set to reverse. Residential construction spending has fallen 65%. Nonresidential construction spending dropped 35%.
November Construction Starts Jump 35% from October
Reed Construction Data (RCD) announced today that the year-to-date value of construction starts through November, excluding residential contracts, totaled $241.5 billion, 1.0% less than during the same months in 2009. Individual month of November starts were 35% above October and 13% above last November.
Sighs of relief from two central bankers over November inflation
Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney must be breathing a sigh of relief. The year-over-year change in Canada’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) in November eased back to +2.0% from +2.4% in October, according to Statistics Canada.
