Housing Market Steady But Still Weak in January
The latest housing market reports were mixed, confirming that the housing market is edging closer to a sustained recovery but that it has not yet begun. Brief surges have occurred several times in the last two years but none have been sustained. Housing starts and existing home sales rose strongly in January while housing permits and new sales both declined significantly.

The accompanying table shows 20 of the largest upcoming California and Florida construction projects. They are all in the planning stage and are mainly new projects, but may also involve additions and/or alterations.
Retire later, stay active, and you will probably live longer
Given the unprecedented number of people who are approaching retirement, it is useful to review the results of a recent Stats Canada survey of Canadians over 55 who had: 1) fully retired; 2) partially retired; 3) retired and returned to work; and 4) those who had never retired.
U.S. new home sales in January beat another retreat
January new home starts in the U.S. may have recorded a solid percentage gain, according to a joint press release from the Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, but other indicators suggest that won’t be a continuing trend. The latest increase in home starts was +14.6% month to month seasonally-adjusted and annualized.
