To feel better, look elsewhere than the U.S. home prices train wreck
While there is reason to be more optimistic about the U.S. economy – and this will be examined further along in this report – there are certain bundles of information that still make one cringe.
Construction Spending Ends the Year on an Up Note
The U.S. Census Bureau reported that total construction spending increased 1.5% in December following a 0.4% rise in November. December total construction spending was $816.4 billion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR)
Heavy Engineering (Non-Building) Construction Ends the Year Strongly
Heavy engineering (non-building) construction spending rose 2.0% in December after advancing 1.8% in November, marking its fifth consecutive monthly increase. For 2011, heavy engineering spending was almost unchanged, down a slight 0.1% from 2010. All major heavy engineering spending categories except conservation and development moved up in December.
Nonresidential Building Construction Advances in December
Nonresidential building construction spending increased 1.7% in December after inching up 0.1% in November. For 2011, spending fell 4.0% from 2010.
New Residential Construction Spending Rises in December
New residential construction spending rose 1.2% in December after advancing 1.9% in November.
